
Stop Fighting Your KHS Blow Molding Line
Nothing is more frustrating than pulling a batch of bottles off the line and seeing wall thickness variations or, worse, a bunch of burst bottles. It usually comes down to one thing: your heat isn’t hitting the PET preforms evenly. When you’ve got cold spots or sections that are overheating, the culprit is almost always the infrared (IR) lamps. Specifically, it’s about where that filament is sitting and what kind of light it’s actually putting out.
The nitty-gritty of heat
We build our replacement lamps to fit the KHS specs perfectly, but the real magic is in the details. Here’s the thing: if the filament shifts by even 0.5mm inside the quartz envelope, the radiation pattern changes. That’s how you get those annoying “stripes” on your preforms. To stop that, we use high-purity quartz. It helps the short-wave IR punch through to the core of the PET instead of just scorching the surface.
Hardware that actually lasts
These lamps run on high voltage to keep the heat dense across the whole tube. Whether you’re dealing with R7s or SK15 connectors, the fit has to be snug. If it’s loose, you get arcing, and your lamps will burn out way too fast. We also use a halogen cycle. It stops the quartz from darkening over time, which means the light stays strong for thousands of hours. When your thermal field is consistent, you can tighten your blowing windows and stop worrying about scrap.
A few things to keep in mind
These are drop-in replacements. You won’t need to rewire your oven or spend a weekend tinkering with the electrical. But a word of advice: don’t just crank up the wattage to chase faster cycle times. That puts a lot of stress on your power supply. Plus, higher output means a hotter oven. If your cooling fans aren’t dialed in, you’ll likely end up with overheated necks. And please, stick to the rated voltage. It’s tempting to over-volt to make old lamps feel “new” again, but all that does is kill the filament. Give them the power they’re built for, and they’ll take care of you.
