
Putting Infrared Heaters in Bathrooms Without Getting Zapped
Putting an infrared lamp in a bathroom isn’t the same as slapping one on a patio. You’ve got steam everywhere, random water splashes, and humidity that just won’t quit. If your insulation slips up even once, the whole metal frame can become live. That’s a nightmare scenario. To stop that from happening, we focus on three things: the seal, the insulators, and the ground. Keeping the water out To make sure electricity stays where it belongs, we use ceramic or PTFE insulators at the terminals. These materials are tough and stop current from leaking into the housing. But the real secret is the gaskets. Standard seals usually fail because they can’t handle the heat expansion. We use silicone-based seals instead. They hold a tight grip even when the lamp swings from a chilly 20°C up to a scorching 600°C. It keeps the moisture far away from the live parts. The wiring side of things I can’t stand exposed terminals. We shroud or pot every single connection. This stops “creepage”—which is basically just a fancy way of saying moisture creating a little bridge for electricity to travel across an insulator. Also, check your wires. They need to be rated for high heat. Because if the wire insulation melts, it doesn’t matter how waterproof your housing is. You’re still in trouble. The heat struggle Here’s the catch: tight seals trap heat. When you seal a unit up tight to prevent shocks, the inside of the fixture gets way hotter. You have to make sure the housing has enough surface area or some smart venting. Otherwise, you’ll just fry your own electronics. Don’t skip the safety Grounding is a must. Period. We bond the outer chassis directly to the earth ground. That way, if a seal ever fails and water hits a live wire, the breaker trips instantly. It’s much better to have the power go out than to have the fixture energize. And please, use a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) on the circuit. It’s the only way to actually sleep easy knowing the installation is safe.
