
Getting Your SACMI Rotary Blow Molders to Heat Up Faster
If you’ve spent any time around a SACMI rotary machine, you know the pace is relentless. PET preforms fly through that oven so fast that every single millisecond matters. If your heat transfer is off by even a fraction, you’re looking at a headache. That’s why we built our IR lamps the way we did. It all comes down to how fast they wake up and how hard they hit. The secret to a fast start To get PET to the right temperature without having to slow down your entire line, we went with short-wave infrared. Why? Because short-wave radiation just punches through the PET wall faster than the other options. We also use high-purity quartz glass. This means the filament hits its operating temperature almost the second you flip the switch. No lagging. No “ramp-up” period. And most importantly, no more fighting with inconsistent wall thickness in your bottles. The nuts and bolts These are designed to be simple drop-in replacements. No fuss. We use heavy-duty connectors—usually R7s or Sk15—because high-frequency switching can be brutal on electrical contacts. We didn’t want any arcing or degradation messing with your uptime. Plus, we tweaked the wattage-to-length ratio so the heat lands exactly where the preform needs it, not just randomly in the oven. Inside the tube, there’s a halogen cycle. It stops the tungsten filament from evaporating too quickly, which keeps your light output steady even after thousands of cycles. A couple of things to watch out for Here’s the catch: when you pack that much heat into a small tube, it puts a lot of pressure on your oven’s reflectors. Keep them polished. Seriously. If they get dirty or pitted, the heat bounces right back into the lamp housing instead of hitting the PET. That’s a one-way ticket to a burnt-out tube. And one last tip: watch your voltage. If you run these lamps above their rated voltage, you’re basically killing them. You’ll shave weeks off their life. Just stick to the spec sheet and your line will keep humming along.
