If you’re putting infrared lamps in a bathroom, you’re playing a balancing act between staying warm and not blowing a fuse. First thing: look for an IPX5 rating. Don’t skip this. It basically means the unit can take a spray of water from any direction without dying. Without that rating, one unlucky shower spray and your circuitry is toast.
How much power do you actually need?
You don’t want to just throw the biggest lamp you can find at the wall. If you’ve got a tiny bathroom—we’re talking under 4m²—something in the 250W to 400W range is plenty. If you go overboard here, you’ll either trigger the thermal cutoff or feel like you’re being baked alive in a sauna. Not exactly the vibe you want after a shower. For those bigger bathrooms (6m² to 10m²), you’ll need a bump up to 600W or 800W. But here’s a pro tip: instead of one massive, scorching lamp, go with two smaller ones. It spreads the heat around better. You won’t have those annoying “cold spots” where you’re shivering in one corner while the other side of the room is roasting.
The trade-off
The great thing about shortwave infrared is that it heats you, not the air. That’s why it’s perfect for damp rooms. You step in and feel the warmth instantly. No waiting around for the whole room to warm up. Just keep an eye on your electrics. High wattage puts a lot of pressure on your circuit breaker. If you’re installing a few 800W units in one area, double-check your wiring. Thin wires will get hot, your voltage will drop, and your lamps won’t last nearly as long.
A few real-world tips
Even with an IPX5 rating, try to keep the lamps away from the direct spray of the shower. The housing can handle the water, but the quartz glass is a different story. If you hit red-hot glass with ice-cold water, it can crack. And please, for the love of your electric bill, don’t just leave them on. Put them on a timer or a moisture-sensing switch. It’s the only way to actually keep your energy costs down.
