
Keeping Bathroom Heaters Warm—and Safe
When we build infrared heaters for bathrooms, we’re dealing with a tricky spot. You’ve got constant steam in the air and people standing right next to the unit. The real headache isn’t actually making the thing hot; it’s making sure the light coming off it doesn’t hurt your eyes. This is a huge deal when you’re thinking about babies, whose eyes are way more sensitive than ours. The light problem If you use a standard short-wave lamp, it’s basically a blinding white light. Nobody wants that in their bathroom. To fix it, we use special coatings or filtered quartz glass. Think of it as a screen that only lets the “warmth” through while blocking the harsh UV rays and the glare. Instead of a spotlight, you get a soft, gentle glow. You still feel that instant heat on your skin, but you can actually look in the direction of the heater without squinting or worrying about long-term eye damage. Dealing with the damp Water and electricity don’t mix. Period. To keep things safe, we tuck the heating elements inside sealed quartz envelopes. If a bit of steam or a stray droplet hits a raw, red-hot filament, the lamp is toast. The seal stops that from happening. Then there’s the heat itself. We want the room to warm up fast, so we use high-wattage tubes. But that creates a new problem: the outer grill gets hot. To keep people from accidentally burning themselves, we use high-grade aluminum or ceramic for the guard. It handles the heat without becoming a hazard. The trade-off Here’s the catch. When you filter out that harsh light to protect your eyes, you lose a little bit of energy. It’s a small price to pay for safety, but we still have to make sure the heater actually heats. To make up for that loss, we either make the filament a bit longer or tweak the voltage. That way, you still get that cozy feeling the second you step out of the shower, even if the bathroom is freezing. One last tip: make sure you wire these into a dedicated, moisture-resistant circuit. It saves you the annoyance of tripping a breaker right when you’re trying to get warm.
