Most heaters just push hot air around the room, which usually means you’re waiting forever for the chill to leave your bones. Recessed infrared heaters are different. They don’t bother with the air; they just beam heat directly onto you. It feels more like standing in a patch of sunlight on a cold day. But flipping a wall switch every time you feel a draft is a pain. That’s where the smart home stuff comes in.
The Nitty-Gritty of the Setup
If you want these heaters to play nice with your smart hub, you can’t just plug them into a cheap smart plug. These things are power-hungry—usually pulling between 1000W and 2500W. You’ll need a heavy-duty Zigbee or Matter-enabled relay that can actually handle that kind of load. If you go too cheap or undersize the switch, the contacts can literally weld themselves shut. Not a great way to find out you bought the wrong part.
Why It Feels Like Magic
The best part about infrared is the speed. There’s no waiting for a furnace to kick in or air to circulate. The second that smart relay clicks, the filament hits temperature and you feel the warmth immediately. I usually set these up with a couple of simple tricks: First,motion sensors. There’s no point in heating an empty bathroom or hallway. The heater kicks in when you walk in and shuts off when you leave. Simple. Second,the weather. I link the system to the local forecast. If it’s a brutal morning and the temp drops below 10°C, the heaters are ready to go before you even step out of bed.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
It’s not all plug-and-play. You’ll probably need a neutral wire in your switch box to keep the smart controller powered up. If your house is older, that might be a hurdle. And here is a pro tip: don’t let your automation turn the heater on and off every two minutes. That constant “clicking” puts a lot of stress on the heating element and will kill it way faster than it should. I always build in a “minimum run-time” in the software. It keeps the hardware happy and makes the heat feel more consistent.
