
Why we put our IP65 heaters through a “humidity hell” test
Bathrooms are honestly a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and water vapor that seems to get everywhere. If you’re selling an IP65-rated infrared heater, a quick splash of water in a lab isn’t going to cut it. That’s why we put every single batch through damp-heat aging tests. We basically try to break them on purpose. Because honestly? I’d rather a unit burn out on my workbench than in your customer’s ceiling.
The sneaky way moisture gets in
Here’s the thing: even with a solid IP65 seal, moisture is persistent. Vapor doesn’t just “leak” in; it diffuses. It seeps through. Once it’s inside, it settles on the electrical terminals and quartz tube mounts. This creates something called “tracking,” where electricity starts crawling across surfaces that are supposed to be insulators. That’s how you end up with a short circuit or a blown fuse. To stop this, we cycle our heaters through extreme heat and humidity. We force the materials to expand and contract over and over. If a gasket is a bit off or a seal is weak, it’ll fail right then and there.
Rust and heat don’t mix
It’s not just about the electricity, though. The heat from the infrared lamp actually speeds up chemical reactions. When you add a damp environment to that mix, metal housings and internal brackets can start to oxidize fast. If those brackets get rusty and weak, the quartz tube can shift. That creates a hot spot, and before you know it, the glass cracks. It’s a domino effect.
The balancing act
You might think, “Just seal it tighter!” But there’s a catch. If we make the seal airtight, the internal pressure spikes the moment the lamp heats up. It’s like a pressure cooker. Too much pressure and the gaskets just pop. So, we spend a lot of time finding the sweet spot. We balance that IP65 protection with just enough controlled venting so the unit can “breathe” without letting the steam in. It’s a tricky bit of engineering, but it’s the only way to make sure these things actually last.
